Public Dialogue / Civic Education

The main objective of all activities of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung is to support democratic and socially just development within Germany as well as in our partner countries abroad. FES Uganda collaborates with local partners to support the transition towards a more democratic, more pluralistic society. To support a culture of dialogue various public meetings are held to discuss social, political and economic issues. FES' main aim is to concentrate on conflict prevention during the period of transition. Activities are conducted to strengthen democratic structures and procedures, promoting the principles of transparency and accountability and providing support to various non-governmental organisations.

Quote (Friedrich Ebert): Without democracy no freedom [...]. To protect and to restore it wherever it is under attack is the task of those who cherish freedom. This has involved workshops, discussion group meetings, working sessions for the Movement Secretariat Representatives, for political scientists and lawyers, for parliamentarians and representatives of various political groups and organisations. Roundtable discussions have been conducted with the Forum for Promoting Democratic Constitutionalism, the Uganda Joint Christian Council and the Forum for Integrity in Democracy. Surveys on political conflicts have been produced with the Research Department of the Movement Secretariat and the Makerere University Peace and Conflict Studies Programme.

Economic policy debates are organised by FES Uganda to enable all stakeholders to develop a understanding of the link between politics and the economy. It tries to facilitate understanding of pertinent economic issues by members of the public.

One of the main fields in which FES is working is that of the Trade Unions, who we support regarding capacity building and the facilitation of information. Relations between varying Media are promoted with the aim of improving self-regulation. Legal, socio-political and economic aspects of the media are highlighted. A special focus is put on gender and womens' issues which is a cross-sectional topic to which special attention is paid in all FES activities. The same is true of the attention paid to Youth issues, covering a wide range from networking to legal development.

Papers related to these topics are regularly published by FES headquarters and other institutions and can be downloaded from our site Documents & Publications.
